Why This Remembrance, We’re Re-Sharing the Powerful Story of Scotty’s Little Soldiers
Ahead of Remembrance Day, many of us pause to honour the incredible sacrifice made by our Armed Forces. For military families, however, this is also a time for reflection. That’s why we’ve chosen to re-release one of the most poignant and important episodes of The InDependent Spouse podcast: my interview with the inspirational founder of Scotty’s Little Soldiers, Nikki Scott.
This is a powerful story of turning unimaginable loss into an epic legacy of hope. While it covers difficult topics like grief and the challenges of military life , it is ultimately a testament to the brilliance of the Armed Forces community and the power of finding a reason to “smile again”.
The Moment That Changed Everything
Nikki’s journey began with the loss of her husband, Lee Scott, who was killed in Afghanistan. The immediate aftermath was defined by darkness, grief, and the intense pressure of dealing with military procedures, like the emotional repatriation at RAF Lyneham.
Nine months later, feeling lost and exhausted, Nikki’s family persuaded her to take her young children, Kai and Brooke, on holiday. It was by the pool, watching her five-year-old son, Kai, smile and laugh for the first time since his dad died, that everything shifted.
That moment was Nikki’s wake-up call. She suddenly wondered how many other children of serving personnel had experienced the death of a parent but hadn’t been given that vital opportunity to relax and have fun. This realisation led to the founding of Scotty’s Little Soldiers.
More Than Just a Charity: It’s a Community
Scotty’s Little Soldiers is a remarkable charity dedicated to supporting all bereaved British forces children. Critically, Nikki highlights that their support extends to any child who has lost a parent that served our country—whether the death was on tour, through illness, or an accident.
The profound benefit of the charity is creating a safe space for children to connect with others who just “get it”. As Nikki recounts, these connections lead to deep, lifetime friendships that are built on a shared, unspoken understanding.
A Legacy of Love and Pride
This episode is a raw look at what happens when the very worst occurs in military life, but it is deeply balanced by the enormous pride Nikki feels for Lee, and the pride she instilled in her children.
As Nikki reminds us, life doesn’t get easier, it changes. Her journey is an incredible inspiration, proving that even after profound loss, you can find a way to live, love, and build a lasting, positive legacy.
