7 Reasons to Finally Start That Military Spouse Business
Are you a UK military spouse looking for business ideas that actually work with armed forces life? Since launching our free business start-up course, the Milspo Business Launch Accelerator, I’ve helped over 120 Milspos move from feeling like a ‘plus one’ to a CEO.
If you’re tired of putting your career on hold every time a posting comes up, here are 7 reasons to start your location-independent business in 2026.
7 Reasons to Finally Start That Military Spouse Business
Since launching the free business start-up course, the Milspo Business Launch Accelerator I’ve found a whole new set of military spouses who want to start their own business – 120 in fact!
And now that word has gotten out, more than ever, Milspo’s who want to start their own business are getting in touch.
And I get it…
They’ve found that being a military spouse means putting their career dreams on hold.
Some have had to relocate, change jobs and put their partner’s career first.
Most are worried about how they are going to build a career that gives them financial freedom, while flexing around the challenges that military life brings.
And others are searching for that missing piece – something to proudly say ‘Yes, I did that!’.
They are ready to create something new, but they are not sure where to start…
As a military spouse, I’ve been there. I’ve had to quit my dream job because we were posted to a new location. I know what it’s like to feel lost and alone when you are constantly on the move.
Like so many other Milspo’s I started my own business in reaction to a military move. I felt that it was the right choice to leave my job to follow my serving husband’s demanding job. And it’s why I started my podcast, The InDependent Spouse, and of course The Milspo Business Network.
Now, almost thirteen years later, that tiny hope, sprung from a dining room table in my tiny flat has become a successful company that I can work on and grow no matter where military life takes me.
It has purposely been built so it’s transient and posting-proof.
I no longer have to worry about getting a new ‘filler’ job when we move or how I am going to explain those massive gaps in my CV at each interview, or who on earth is going to look after our son when my husband is inevitably deployed and it’s the half-term holidays.
It is the best solution I have found that slots as neatly into my roller-coaster military life as I can manage.
So why, as a military spouse, partner or other-half is it so amazing to run your own business – and here’s why I think you should do it too!
1 Maintain Career Continuity through Entrepreneurship
Nothing sucks more than leaving a job you love, especially if you’re highly trained and love doing what you do. The brilliance of entrepreneurship is that you don’t have to give up what you love, and you can build on your previous experience in that sector.
When I left my job as a graphic designer in 2012 I knew that I had the skills and experience from six years of working in an agency to apply the knowledge to start my own company. I knew that I had just about enough knowhow to start off and be successful, and that with the right support I could learn the ins and outs of business.
There’s been a lot of trial and error, and I have hunted out a few business courses to help with the fiddly things, but as long as you have the right mindset, anything is possible.
Everyone in business started in the same position, so you know you can do it too.
2 Flexibility for Postings and Deployments
Military life can be all over the place. You could be asked to move to a new house with very little notice or be left the sole carer for your entire family for up to nine months; sometimes even both!?
I love that my business can fit into my increasingly hectic life and be flexible enough to deal with detachments and postings. I know that when my husband is away I can be selfish and commit 110% to my business, (around the childcare juggle), but I also know that if he arrives home early (or inevitably late) that I can shuffle the majority of my work around his dates.
Basically, I don’t have to give up what I am loving doing just because military life flings me a curve ball.
3 A sense of purpose
When I first married my husband and moved to our first RAF base I literally lost all sense of who I was.
Not only had I left my home in beautiful Bath (to move into a magnolia pre-fab! Yuck!), I’d also left my wonderful friends, my amazing job and my maiden name behind. Added to that, the never-ending detachments meant that I was so lonely!
I spent the first year of our marriage, shouting a bit, crying a lot and then finally trying to work out where I would fit. Maybe I was a housewife now? Was I really meant to be enjoying these coffee mornings where all we talked about was the serving person we hadn’t seen for 9 weeks?! Turns out there isn’t a ‘cookie-cutter’ version of a military spouse, we have all struggled at one time or another to find our place.
I have friends who are amazing mothers, inspirational fundraisers, passionate bakers – and all of the above; my purpose is as a business owner.
4. Financial Independence and Increasing Family Income
Leaving your employment doesn’t just mean you leave something you love, it also means you leave the salary that comes with it.
Overnight we were £30k worse-off in our household. No matter how ‘subsidised’ the married quarter rent is, it doesn’t quite make up for the fact that you’re down on monthly income and you are relying on your spouse for financial support – which is rarely feasible nowadays.
Plus, being financially reliant never really sat well with me. I was raised by fierce women who always made their own money and as a 90’s child took the line from the ‘Sunscreen Song’ literally
Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one might run out.
I knew that for our marriage to work well he couldn’t be the only one making the money. Running my own business seemed like a great solution.
It provides a little wriggle room for when my husband books a holiday and it also feeds my expensive gardening addiction (why have a magnolia married quarter if you can’t fill it with blooms!).
5 I get to do some really cool things, with some really cool people!
Away from the daily admin and the fun I have building Milspo, I run workshops and present in some epic rooms. I’ve met Prime Ministers, Steven Bartlett, Holly Branson, Carrie Green, and won the odd award – all because of my business. (Full transparency – I met Steven Bartlett in a room full of suits, wearing a crinkled dress and massive sleep deprivation bags – one of which I’d dragged out of a moving box two days earlier!).
Plus the MOD has even funded a start-up course, so I get to do even more!
It means I get to work with some wonderful people who are now great friends. We are like minded and supportive of each other which is especially important when you are away from family and friends. It makes a huge difference to my military life.
Sometimes running a business alone combined with military life can be a lonely affair but I know that the network I have built up, both in my current posting and virtually, means I can never be truly alone.
6 Building a Portable, Posting-Proof Business
If you’re like me and have one of those pesky serving people who keep making you move house you can set out to make your business transient. Then when the time comes to move, with a few tweaks and these handy tips, you can slip almost seamlessly into your new location without damaging your business too much.
To tell the truth, it’s not ideal for business changing locations every 2-3 years, but actually it’s also pretty bad for your brain as well – at least I can pick up my work at each posting, rather than starting from scratch and applying for remote work, and it gives me something to focus on (once I’ve found myself under all of the moving boxes), and
7 It’s fun!
I really love my business. It’s given me freedom, purpose and makes that tough military life a little bit happier. Yes, it can be hard work when you’re up against a deadline but the results you get from knowing it’s been achieved by my own hard work are amazing!
If you’re a military spouse, partner or other-half even with a tiny inkling that you’d like to run a business that survives active military service life, deployments, tours and postings then just give it a go.
I’ve created my own business that allows me the freedom to work from anywhere we’re posted.
And I’m not alone. There are a whole host of business owners, all around the country (and beyond) doing exactly the same. We meet up online, chat about the chaos, and most importantly build amazing businesses.
Ready to stop being the “plus one” and start being the CEO? I’ve been where you are—staring at the moving boxes and wondering where my career went.
But 2026 is the year we stop waiting for “the right time” (because let’s be honest, in this modern military world, it doesn’t exist!). It’s time to claim your label and build something that is 100% yours.
Whether you’re currently working on something or just have a tiny inkling of an idea, I’ve got you.
